Assume It Works Out
A mentor told me this once: “Always assume things will work out, then do the work to make it true.” Most people hear the first half and dismiss it as positive thinking. Assume things will work out. Sure, nice sentiment. What they miss is that the first half is useless without the second. The second half is what makes the first half true. Together they produce something neither produces alone: a quiet confidence that lets you tolerate uncertainty better than anything else I’ve found.
The distinction worth naming is between naive optimism and active confidence. Naive optimism assumes the outcome and waits. It’s passive. It outsources resolution to circumstances, to luck, to other people coming through. Active confidence assumes the outcome and then asks: given that it will work out, what do I need to do right now? The assumption is still there. But it’s been placed under accountability. You’re not hoping. You’re committing.
Two axes help you locate which mode you’re actually in. The first is posture: are you hoping things might work out, or assuming they will? Hoping is tentative. It leaves the door open to hedging, to protecting yourself, to half-measures. Assuming is a stance. It changes how you show up before the outcome is visible. The second axis is agency: are you waiting for circumstances to align, or treating the assumption as something you’re responsible for making true? Waiting is passive even when it looks like patience. Acting from the assumption means you’re not watching the situation, you’re working on it.
The assumption changes the quality of your work before it changes the outcome. The person who assumes failure hedges, delays, holds back. The person who assumes things will work out asks what’s needed and does it. Same situation, different motion.
“Do the work to make it true” is the accountability clause. Without it the whole thing collapses into wishful thinking. The assumption earns its place by obligating effort.
Quiet confidence is the byproduct, not the goal. You don’t manufacture it directly. It emerges when your internal posture and your actual effort are pointing the same direction. You feel settled not because you know how it ends, but because you know you’re doing what the assumption requires.
This is the mechanism for tolerating uncertainty. You can’t eliminate uncertainty. But you can stop treating it as a verdict. The assumption reframes uncertainty as a condition you’re working inside, not a signal about the outcome. The uncertainty doesn’t go away. Your relationship to it changes.
The combination builds a track record with yourself. Each time you assume, act, and see it resolve, even partially, the pattern reinforces. Over time you develop evidence that the posture works. That evidence is what quiet confidence actually is.
Before you act, ask these. Are you assuming the outcome, or hoping for it? Is the work you’re doing right now consistent with someone who believes it will work out? Are you waiting for more certainty before committing fully, or are you acting from the assumption already?
One limit: assuming things will work out doesn’t guarantee they will. Sometimes they don’t. The assumption isn’t a prediction, and treating it like one is where the idea gets misused. When it doesn’t work out, the assumption still served its purpose: it produced the best possible effort and kept you from hedging yourself into a worse outcome. The alternative, assuming failure, produces worse work and the same result. The posture was still right. The outcome just wasn’t.
Confidence isn’t a feeling you wait for. It’s a decision you make before the outcome is visible.
